How to use the Platform

How do you add a new place-name (toponym)?

  • Go to the Platform page.
  • Click the “Add a new toponym” button. You will then see a table like this:
  • Click on the point where you want to add a toponym (e.g. a specific river or hill). You can zoom in on the map by adjusting the scrolling wheel on your mouse or by clicking the “+” button in the top right of the screen.
  • In the table, you can include any information that you consider worthwhile sharing. The following questions and sample answers should help you with this:
Type of object in your native language   Sample answer: bira (the Ewenki for “river”)
Type of object translated into English   Sample answer: river
Name of the object (toponym)   Sample answer: Oron
The language of the toponym  Sample answer: Ewenki
  • In addition, you can add a photograph, video or drawing of this place. To do so, upload an image or video to the Internet (for example, to Google Drive or Yandex.Disk) and provide a link to the file or a folder containing pictures.
  • If you know any story about the name of the place, you can share this too! To do so, click “Tell us about the toponym”. You will then see a form in which you can write your story, as in this example:
Name of the object (toponym) translated into English  Sample answer: Deet
Why is this place named in this way?   Sample answer: deer graze there in autumn.
Does the place have any other names (e.g. in a different language or a different name it was known under in the past)? What is this name? Sample answer: Yes, Sulaki (Ewenki for “fox”).  Or: This place used to be called “mossy”, because there is a lot of reindeer moss there.
  • Once you have finished entering all the data, click “I agree to the transfer of data”. All the data will then be in the public domain and therefore visible to all users of the toponymic platform. That is why your voluntary consent is important. If you would like to retain rights as author of the material, please include your full name, date of birth, and the name of your settlement (this is not obligatory, however; you can share data anonymously if you wish).
  • Make sure you remember to click the “Save” button.

Attention: the data will be sent to the server (site developers), but will not appear online immediately. It will only be posted on the site after verification by a moderator. This is to prevent spam and vandalism.

If you experience any difficulties in uploading the data by yourself, or cannot find the name of the place on the map, you can submit its approximate coordinates or contact us. We will be happy to help you out!
